Core Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program (for researchers)

One to Two Semesters

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is a research grant for experienced professionals, university faculty members and researchers with ten or more years of professional experience. The program seeks proposals on a wide range of topics in all disciplines with a priority in Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and other education fields.

Applicants requesting support for a full academic year (two semesters) must provide a timeline of research activities. Final grant dates will align with the host institution’s academic calendar, if applicable, and the total length of the program may not exceed 10 months or two academic semesters.

*Please note: applicants in law fields are limited to a maximum of one-semester. Research in the field of medicine may not involve any contact with patients.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 10 years of work experience in the chosen field of study
• Proficiency in English that would enable the candidate to carry out the proposed research in the United States.
• Three (3) recommendation letters from persons in a position to judge the applicant’s professional qualities
• A fully filled-out program application with a research proposal. Please note, applicants applying for a two-semester program must provide a specific timeline of activities and research to be undertaken; otherwise, if selected their program will automatically be shortened to one semester
• The applicant must be a citizen of Turkmenistan, work and reside in Turkmenistan at the time of application

Eligibility (applicable to ALL Fulbright programs):

• Employees of the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and individuals associated with any organization responsible for nominating or selecting participants for any exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State are ineligible for Fulbright grants during and for a period ending one year following the termination of employment or association
• Immediate family members and dependent children of individuals described above are also ineligible. This does not apply to self-supporting children who live apart from their parents
• Individuals holding U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (green card) are ineligible for Fulbright grants 

Subcomponents of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Programs

Candidates may apply for one of the following subcategories of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program. No additional application is needed; however, the candidate should specify interest in the specific subcomponent in the statement of purpose.

Fulbright Distinguished Scholars or Professionals

Three Months to One Semester

This program is offered to individuals holding leadership positions within universities, government agencies, cultural institutions, or non-profit organizations. Projects may be as short as 3 months, but no more than 1 academic semester. Distinguished Scholars may propose performing one or a combination of the following functions in the United States:

• Present lectures on a regular basis or consult with officials at institutions of higher learning;
• Help to plan and participate in approved seminars or workshops
• Take part in other academic or cultural programs sponsored by educational institutions or cooperating agencies in the United States.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 10 years of work experience in the chosen field of study
• Proficiency in English that would enable the candidate to carry out the proposed research in the United States.
• Three (3) recommendation letters from persons in a position to judge the applicant’s professional qualities
• The applicant must be a citizen of Turkmenistan, work and reside in Turkmenistan at the time of application

Fulbright Junior Faculty

One Semester

This program is offered to faculty with a minimum of 3 years of full-time teaching experience at a university or institute. All grants are 1 semester in length. This program is intended to enable participants to explore best practices and theoretical approaches to curriculum development in the United States. Applicants should propose a specific host university that will provide them with concrete strategies on how to develop curriculum for a specific course, including an overview of academic and research resources to be utilized at the U.S. institution.

During their grant, participants will be expected to research and develop a course description, syllabus and outline specific teaching strategies for their proposed course.

Candidates must intend to return to their home institution upon completion of the Program, reengage in teaching activities, and implement newly gained knowledge and experience gained on this program. Applications must fall under the following parameters:

Objectives:

• Continued professional development for faculty through research and mentorship
• Long-term collaboration and institutional linkages between Turkmenistan and U.S. academics
• Promotion of mutual understanding between Turkmenistan and the United States

Grants are not for the principal purpose of:

• Attending conferences
• Completing doctoral dissertations
• Travel and consultation at multiple institutions, or
• Clinical medical research involving patient contact (not permissible)

• The applicant must be a citizen of Turkmenistan, work and reside in Turkmenistan at the time of application

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program (separate application form)

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program brings scholars and professionals from other countries to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities that do not often host visiting scholars.

Under this program, interested U.S. institutions submit proposals to invite scholars for 1-2 semesters to teach courses in area studies, in inter-disciplinary programs that focus on global issues, or in courses where participation of the foreign scholar can provide a cross-cultural or international perspective.

How to Apply:
