Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships Bachelor’s, PhD, College degree, for 2024 year
The Japanese government has started accepting applications from foreign students for scholarship programmes (“Research Student”, “Student” (undergraduate level), “Technology College Student” and “Specialist Training College Student”) in 2024. Citizens of Turkmenistan should apply at the Embassy.
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
(1) Allowance: The amounts listed below shall be paid depending on the course enrolled in. A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.
(2) Education fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT. The entrance examination fee, however, will be borne by the grantees if they cannot proceed to the master’s or doctoral course or cannot be admitted by the university.
(3) Traveling Expenses
- Research student (postgraduate level)
Eligibility: Anyone born on or after April 2, 1989 who has graduated from a higher education institution (including graduates of the current academic year).
– Content: Candidates who are enrolled in this programme after completing six months of preparatory Japanese studies in Japan (only for those who need Japanese language training) will receive a major in postgraduate studies.
– Study period: mainly 2 years (including 6 months of Japanese preparatory period)
- Student (undergraduate level)
Eligibility: Anyone born on or after April 2, 1999 who has completed 12 years of high school education or graduated from a high school program corresponding to high school (including graduates of the current academic year).
– Content: Those enrolled in this program will receive 1 year of preparatory Japanese language training in Japan (conducted at the Foreign Language Training Center of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Osaka University of Foreign Studies) before entering university and will receive a bachelor’s degree upon completion.
– Duration of study: 5 years (7 years for students majoring in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy).
- Student of a technology college (vocational school level)
Eligibility: Mainly those born on or after April 2, 1999, who have completed 11 years of school education (including graduates of the current academic year).
– Content: Those who are enrolled in this program after completing the 1st year of preparatory Japanese studies in Japan will go on to the 3rd year of a college of technology and receive a 3-year special education. All classes will be conducted in Japanese.
– Duration of study: 4 years (including a 1-year preparatory period of Japanese language studies immediately after arrival in Japan). However, the duration of study for those choosing the Merchant Vessel specialisation will be 4 years 6 months.
– Areas of study: You can choose from eight areas of study such as (1) Mechanical, (2) Electrical, Electronics, (3) Information and Communication Network, (4) Materials, (5) Architecture, (6) Civil Engineering, (7) Merchant Marine, (8) Other.
Note: If you select (8) “Other”, it may be difficult to find an institution (e.g. because there is none, etc.) for majors such as: “Information Management Engineering” and others, please stick to (1) to (7) when selecting.
- Specialist training college student (specialist training college level)
Eligibility: Mainly persons born on or after April 2, 1999 who have completed 12 years of school education (including graduates of the current academic year).
– Content: Those who are enrolled in this program after completing the 1st year of preparatory Japanese studies in Japan will enter a specialized course at a specialized college and receive 2 years of specialized education. All classes will be conducted in Japanese.
– Duration of study: 3 years (including 1 year of preparatory Japanese language training immediately after arrival in Japan).
– Areas of study: You may choose from among the following 6 areas of study.
(1) Industry, (2) Hygiene, (3) Education and social welfare, (4) Trade, (5) Clothing, decoration and housekeeping, (6) Culture and education.

Applicants MUST read through the Application Guidelines below and follow the instructions. Application Forms along with Certificate of Health, and Recommendation Letter should be submitted to the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country. These documents can be printed out and filled in by hand-written, typed out, or filled in with software applications and printed out.

Applicants must submit the following documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission in the country of the applicant’s nationality by the designated deadline. The submitted documents will not be returned.

2 Placement Preference Application Form
3 Field of Study and Research Plan
4 Academic transcript for all academic year of university attended
5 Certification of graduation or degree certificate of the university attended
6 Recommendation letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended
7 Medical certificate
8 Abstracts of thesis (if applicable: Submit if the applicant has written thesis)
9 Certificate of language proficiency (if applicable)
10 Recommendation letter from the present employer (if applicable: Submit if the applicant is currently employed)
11 Photograph(s) showing applicant’s own works of art or a digitally recorded media of musical performance (if applicable: Submit if the applicant is to major in fine arts or music)
