What was your experience applying to SPbSU?
– I applied to the university on a competitive basis. Each applicant has the opportunity to apply to three faculties at once, but for each faculty, a separate set of documents is required. This included an application form, a list of achievements (such as participation in academic competitions, certificates from completed courses, etc.), and, of course, personal documents.
What do you think helped you succeed in your application?
– I had been studying English since childhood, attending various courses. I attached my certificates when I submitted the application. I believe my main advantage was that I demonstrated genuine interest and readiness for the chosen field of study. Additionally, it’s important to highlight the significance of good grades in high school.
Overall, the application process isn’t particularly difficult, as everything is clearly explained on the website. Moreover, currently, you only need to fill out a form and submit an application. If any questions arise, the admissions office is always happy to help.
What are the pros and cons of studying at SPbSU?
– When admitted to a tuition-free program, there are many benefits: financial assistance, the opportunity to receive an increased scholarship, low-cost dormitory accommodation, free countryside trips, etc. Students can receive financial assistance twice a year if they have a certain social status. Also, if a student goes home for the holidays and provides the necessary documents, part of the travel expenses can be reimbursed (once, I was also reimbursed for my travel costs).
One of the main drawbacks is the dormitory. It is located in Peterhof, and if attending in-person classes, it takes about five hours a day to commute back and forth. However, several faculties are within walking distance of the dormitory, so some students don’t need to travel into the city. Since SPbSU has several dormitories in the city itself, students are automatically placed on a waiting list to be relocated.
What advice would you give to those applying now?
– Prepare in advance, enhance your application with various certificates, participation in academic competitions and events, as the admissions committee evaluates applications based on achievements. Try to stand out positively among other applicants.
